About
James:
Jim
Folts has been a photography enthusiast since he was in
high school and took photographs for the school newspaper,
developing them in his mother’s laundry room. He graduated
from Princeton with a B.A. in English, then followed up
with degrees in science and journalism. His interest in
the aesthetic, informational, and technical aspects of photography
followed those academic interests.
Today he teaches courses in beginning black & white
and color photography, studio photography, publication photography,
digital photography, alternative processes, documentary
photography, photo illustration, and the history of photography
at Oregon State University. He is continually amazed by
new and emerging areas in photography as well as the richness
of its history and tradition. Nothing thrills him more than
to see maturing photographers find their own “eye”
and their own approach to creating photographic images.

Behind
Handbook of Photography:
The
Handbook of Photography grew out of Journalism 344, an introductory
black and white photography course pioneered by Fred Zwahlen
in the 1950s. The book, like the field itself, has evolved
over the years into something much more complex and diverse.
The book has added material first on electronic cameras,
then on digital imaging. It has added nearly 25 years of
photographic history that didn’t exist when first
written. It has seen myriad products and processes come
and go, but tried never to forget the sense of magic and
excitement that comes with watching that first print come
up in the developer. Along with this comes a sense of satisfaction
with having begun to develop a mastery of photography as
a means of seeing the world and sharing that vision with
others.
