Behind
Exploring Illustrator and Exploring Photoshop:
I’m
a teacher at heart, and enjoy finding creative instructional
approaches to computer technology and graphics’ learning
and training. The writing of the Exploring Illustrator and
Exploring Photoshop books is just another opportunity for
me to find ways to engage the artistic learner, and share
from my own experience the successes and pitfalls of working
innovatively with a medium comprised of a bunch of zeros
and ones, bits and bytes, pixels and light.
When writing software books there are many challenges; mainly,
the short time frame in which to write the books, and the
creation and acquisition of the materials, lessons sources,
and images for the book. I tend to find my material for
the books through close friends, family, and professional
colleagues. For example, most of all the photographs used
in the creation of the lessons were taken by my mother,
Carolyn, who is never without a camera around her neck,
as she is a graphic artist by profession. Many of the ideas
for the actual lessons come from instructors of Illustrator
and Photoshop at Modesto Junior College, where I am an adjunct
online instructor, alumni, and daughter of one of the college’s
devoted fine arts and computer graphics faculty, Terry Hartman.
Also, the Adventures in Design scenarios throughout the
books are actual experiences I have had or colleagues have
had with clients.
As an author, my hope is to stay true to my own experience
with these programs and along the way ignite the creative
sparks of my students and readers. - Annesa Hartman
