Behind Exploring
Drawing for Animation
Co-author
Kevin Hedgpeth and I decided that there was a void in the
relationship between drawing skills and animation in teaching
literature, and felt we could produce a work that would
fill that void. In the book, our own artwork is featured
and I was interested that the cover art, a painting of mine,
was chosen by Thomson Delmar Learning. Its genesis was difficult,
and took many preliminary drawings and much adjusting to
complete. Normally I don’t labor quite so much on
a painting. My favorite chapter is the one on character
development, probably because we both were able to play
a bit in the illustrations. A fun feature in the book is
the last chapter, in which we interview two of our colleagues
about animation techniques. Both were animators at Fox Studios.
This is a practical and “up-close” look at the
real world of animation. – Steve Missal
