Jeff Otto

About Jeff Otto:

I have had a rich and varied creative career, and I'm not about to stop now. I have freelanced for 25 years as an illustrator and multimedia artist, doing work for Ryder Truck, New York Power Authority, and Dupont. I have earned a Master's degree in Art Education and an MFA in Painting. I've traveled through Europe to study Baroque altar pieces and created fine art shrines that have been exhibited in the San Bernardino, Winterthur, and Franklin Institute Museums. Now I'm writing music and working on a stop-motion animation for one of my songs. I have experienced a lot and want to experience a whole lot more.

Behind The Art Student Survival Guide :

I have been associated with artists in higher education my entire adult life—10 years as an art student earning three degrees, 12 years as a professor working with students in studios and computer labs, and 7 years as an administrator running a large Media Arts & Animation department at an art college. I have worked with many instructors and many more students, and I have witnessed firsthand the success and/or lack of success that many of them have experienced.

One observation I have made is that successful art students usually go on to become successful artists. A few years ago I decided to write a book that would contain tools, tips, and techniques to help individuals succeed at the “art” of being art students. A guidebook to help make the journey through art school a little smoother and a little less frantic. A journey that would lead to a successful career as an artist.

Besides the actual writing, I especially enjoyed drawing the illustrations for the book. They were all drawn with vintage fountain pens from the 30's and 40's. - Jeffrey Otto
