Behind
The Digital Designer: 101 Graphic Design Projects for
Print, the Web, Multimedia & Motion Graphics:
My clients
have – for the most part - wanted me to develop an
institutional identity across a wide range of design media.
I foresee that our work will expand from campaigns and graphic
strategies. In the future, new company positions will emerge
in which the culture of the workplace will move under the
responsibility and control of a design team. The transition
from the message on the page, to an architecture of graphic
information, to the construction of institutional meaning,
and finally, to redesign of productive work processes, will
signify that the iterative process of successful design
has now become a cultural norm.
I have been an educator and designer for almost 30 years.
I bought my first Mac 25 years ago, so I have been right
in the middle of the changes that the information revolution
has created. I have seen a new culture evolve, and a new
way to perceive, understand, and participate in the world
we are a part of. The change has helped us see ourselves
as more embedded in a network of relationships and influences.
The Digital Designer is about that transformation more than
it is about anything else. Collecting and assessing the
hundreds of submissions from college students across the
country, learning from and working with college design faculty
throughout the US, and working with the Thomson Delmar Learning
team, were all exciting and inspiring experiences. It certainly
has given me great pleasure in the 8 months The Digital
Designer has been out to have heard from so many faculty
and students how helpful the approaches to design research
and design method, as well as the 101 project launches,
have been to them in class and in their first professional
projects. The network emerging around this collaborative
work continues to expand. - Stephen Pite
